How Lely makes cows walk

Lely pioneered the ABC grazing system more than 15 years ago and by far most of our installations in Australia are pasture based systems. This involves splitting the land into 3 different paddocks and utilising the Lely Grazeway selection box.
The Grazeway determines whether a cow can go out to grass, or whether she needs to be milked first. The cow will then be routed to the appropriate grazing block, according to the time of day.

Prior to startup, we advise for the cows to be walked through the robots while they are off and with the exit and entrance gates open the entire time. Afterwards, the cows are walked through the robot again however this time, the gates close and they are given feed. This is to ensure the cows become comfortable being inside the box.

Lely designs free-flowing systems that allow cows to move easily into the dairy, get milked, and return to the paddocks. Cows prefer clear paths, and the Astronaut's I-Flow design ensures unhindered entry, guiding them smoothly to their milking turn. This can lead to more frequent milking and increased milk yield.

The Lely Astronaut milking robot encourages cows to return for milking by offering small feed rewards during each session. This positive reinforcement not only motivates cows to visit the robot regularly but also creates a natural rhythm for them to return on their own.
