Meet Heath Williams

Heath Williams, an innovative dairy farmer from Meningie, South Australia, embraced robotic milking technology in 2024. In February, he installed his first Lely Astronaut A5 Milking Robot, and after witnessing its remarkable performance and positive impact, a second robot was added in August. The robots have seamlessly integrated into Heath's operation, enabling him to continue milking 550 cows traditionally alongside his parents on another farm. The minimal costs of retrofitting the robots have made them a highly efficient and valuable addition to his business.

Retrofitting Milking Robots

An old ten double-up dairy that hadn’t been used in 20 years was given new life when Heath decided to retrofit it with two milking robots. The shed was gutted, and minimal concreting was done to prepare the shed for the robotic system.

“The main reason for retrofitting was the cost saving. We managed to use the existing silo, some of the existing feed system, the existing machine room is now the office, the vat room is the same, and the cow entry yard is the same as what it would have been 20 years ago.”

Heath estimates that by utilising the existing infrastructure, he achieved an impressive cost saving of approximately $300,000.
